Data Sources & Methodology
TruckerStack data comes from official U.S. sources: the FMCSA Company Census File on data.transportation.gov for carrier counts and reports, live FMCSA open data for the USDOT/MC lookup, and the eCFR for regulatory thresholds. Each data page shows its dataset, query date and file update date.
Sources
| What | Source | Used on |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier counts, monthly new registrations | FMCSA Company Census File (data.transportation.gov) | Carriers by state, Reports |
| Carrier lookup by USDOT or MC | FMCSA open data on data.transportation.gov, queried live | USDOT & MC lookup |
| Insurance minimums, CDL and weight rules | eCFR Title 49 and FMCSA pages | Guides and the authority checker |
| State IRP, IFTA and weight-distance rules | State agency pages linked on each guide | State guides |
How counts are made
Active counts use records with status code A grouped by physical-address state. Monthly reports count records by add date within the month. Counts include all USDOT registrant types (not only for-hire trucking companies) and can change as FMCSA updates the file.
Updates
Data pages show the file update date and the date we queried it, and carry the same date as dateModified in their structured data. Guides show the date they were last reviewed against eCFR and FMCSA pages. Calculators run in your browser on the numbers you enter; they do not use averages we invented.
