ELDs for Owner-Operators: How to Choose a Compliant Device

Pick an ELD only from FMCSA's registered ELD list, confirm you aren't exempt, then compare total monthly cost, contract length, hardware, data-transfer method and support. Vendors self-certify, so a device can be removed from the list. Check the list and FMCSA's revoked-devices page before you buy.

Are you exempt?

Source: FMCSA ELD overview. Hot shot and box truck operators running interstate CMVs are usually covered unless one of these applies.

3-minute verification routine

  1. Find the exact model and version on the registered list.
  2. Check it isn't on the revoked list.
  3. Ask the vendor for the user manual, data-transfer instructions and malfunction instruction sheet; drivers must carry these.

Vendors you'll see

Widely marketed vendors include Motive, Samsara, Garmin and many smaller providers. We don't rank them: confirm registration status, then compare written total cost. No affiliate links here.
