How to Start a Box Truck Business (2026): Rules, Costs, Steps
A box truck business hauls freight or deliveries in a straight truck. Most owners choose trucks rated 26,000 lb GVWR or less so drivers don't need a CDL. If you haul for hire across state lines in a truck rated 10,001 lb or more, you need a USDOT number, MC authority, a BOC-3, UCR registration and at least $750,000 in public liability coverage.

Pick a model first
Common models: freight through brokers and load boards (needs MC authority if interstate for-hire), contracted last-mile delivery (contract terms define insurance and authority), and moving (household goods carries extra FMCSA consumer-protection rules, see Protect Your Move). Your model decides authority type, insurance and which truck to buy.
The 26,000 vs 26,001 lb rule
A single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 lb or more needs a Class B CDL; at 26,000 lb or less, no CDL is federally required unless it carries placarded hazmat or 16+ passengers (49 CFR 383.91). GVWR is the manufacturer's rating on the door-jamb label. Read more: box truck CDL rules.
Federal requirements
| Item | Applies when | Source |
|---|---|---|
| USDOT number | Interstate, 10,001 lb+ | 390.201 |
| MC authority | For-hire interstate | FMCSA |
| Public liability | $750,000 for general freight at 10,001 lb+ | 387.9 |
| BOC-3 | Before authority | Part 366 |
| UCR | Yearly, interstate | ucr.gov |
| Medical card, HOS, ELD | CMV drivers, unless excepted | 391.41, 395 |
| IFTA | 2 axles and over 26,000 lb, or 3+ axles, interstate | IFTA, Inc. |
Most 26,000 lb two-axle box trucks are not IFTA-qualified; a 26,001 lb+ two-axle truck is.
Costs to model before you buy
Model insurance, truck payment, fuel (diesel or gas ÷ MPG), maintenance per mile, tolls, ELD and fees against realistic monthly miles. We don't publish average incomes: they vary by market and contract. Use the box truck calculator per load and the cost per mile calculator per month.

FAQ
Do I need an MC number for a box truck?
Only if you haul other people's freight for pay across state lines (for-hire interstate). Private carriers hauling their own goods don't need operating authority, but may still need a USDOT number.
Do I need a CDL for a 26 ft box truck?
Not if its GVWR is 26,000 lb or less and it doesn't carry placarded hazmat (49 CFR 383.91). Check the door-jamb label.
What insurance does a box truck need?
For-hire interstate general freight at 10,001 lb+ needs at least $750,000 public liability (49 CFR 387.9); brokers and shippers usually also ask for cargo coverage.
