Hot Shot Trucking Requirements (DOT, MC, Medical Card, Insurance)
Once a pickup and trailer are rated 10,001 lb or more combined and cross state lines, the rig is a commercial motor vehicle: you need a USDOT number, a DOT medical card and hours-of-service records. If you haul for hire, add MC authority, a BOC-3, UCR and at least $750,000 in liability.

When a hot shot rig becomes a CMV
Federal safety rules apply to a vehicle or combination used in interstate commerce with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 10,001 lb or more (49 CFR 390.5). Most one-ton pickups pulling a gooseneck cross that line. Use the ratings on the door and trailer VIN plates, not the scale weight.

FAQ
Do I need MC authority to haul my own goods?
No. MC authority is for for-hire carriers. A private carrier still needs a USDOT number for an interstate CMV of 10,001 lb or more.
Is $750,000 enough?
It is the federal minimum for general freight. Many brokers and shippers require $1,000,000 plus cargo coverage; see our insurance comparison.
Does a hot shot driver need an ELD?
Usually, if records of duty status are required. Exceptions include the short-haul exception and drivers who keep paper logs no more than 8 days in any 30-day period (49 CFR 395.8 and 395.1).
